The High Street Haunting

Last fall NWCPS received an email from a woman who recently moved to Torrington, CT
from a city in Southwestern Connecticut. The woman, who we will call Carol, stated that
strange things have been going on in the new home that her and her husband Steve had
purchased only a few months before.
Before telling us what was going on in the house, she gave us a little background on her
husband. She explained that Steve had been able to see spirits, or entities ever since he
can remember. Steve would see things at his childhood home, at his place of employment,
as well as on family vacations and especially in the apartment that he had lived in prior to
moving to Torrington. Carol was skeptical of Steve's insistence of ghosts, etc. and she
had never actually thought there were spirits, and used logic to explain these sightings
away. That was until one evening at Steve's apartment something Carol never expected
happened. She had gone to bed while Steve and their then 12 yr old son were in the next
room watching a movie. She woke up and could not breathe. She was screaming for
either of them to help her, but she could not make a noise, and neither Steve or her son
heard her. After what seemed like an eternity, she was able to move again and ran into
the room to ask them why they didn't come to her aide. Apparently, just before she came
out of the room, Steve had seen a black shadow walk out, and thought nothing of it, as he
has seen it before, but it had never given him any trouble. After that incident, Carol was
unable to stay in the apartment and they decided they would look for a house of their own,
sooner, rather than wait another year like planned.
They had found the house on High Street, moved in and were excited to finally be away
from the apartment. That was until they finally moved in, and Carol started feeling strange
presences throughout the house. She claims that she never felt alone, as if she was
always being watched. She explained this to Steve and he told her that he too had not
only felt the presence, but had actually seen things in and around the house. He never
mentioned it to her for fear she would not want to stay there. She decided that she would
stay at the house seeing as nothing had tried to harm either her or her son. Things were
fine in the house for the next few weeks. They finished the move, and even fenced in a
yard so that they could have pets. Carol felt better with her animals in the
house (two rottweilers and a doberman, who wouldn't feel better?) until the dogs started
acting strangely. For no reason, the dogs would stare at a blank wall and either whine, or
growl. This happened most often in the couples bedroom and the library. When they
started to remodel and update the house, things took a turn for the worse! While sitting in
the kitchen one afternoon, chatting on the phone with a friend, she glanced into the
dinning room and thought she saw a dark figure looking in at her through the window.
When she looked out, there was nothing there. She called Steve, and he told her that she
would be fine, to just keep the dogs inside with her, and he would be home soon. She did
just that. When her son Jason returned home from school, she was upstairs cleaning up
some of the debris from there remodel and told him to finish his homework in the kitchen.
As Jason was in the kitchen, he saw something in the dinning room, and as he got up to
see what it was, two of the dogs were pacing about and growling, while the other ran into
the kitchen and stayed under the table and began whimpering. He mentioned this to
Carol, and she told him that the dogs had been acting strangely day, and they probably
just wanted him to pay attention to them.
Two nights later, Steve was in the Library while Carol was getting ready for bed. As she
looked up at one of the walls they were tearing down, ready to make a comment about the
mess it was making, she saw a man, who looked to be wearing clothes from maybe the
1950's, hanged with a noose where the wall was. After this episode, that is when they
decided to contact professionals to see what was going on in the house, and if they were
in any danger. That is when Carol and Steve went on the Internet, and contacted us
because we were local. She emailed us, and told us everything. It was apparent that she
was quite anxious, so we scheduled an investigation for the following Saturday. While
waiting for NWCPS, Carol was still uneasy about the things in the house, especially now
that her son was experiencing them too, so she had sent Jason to his grandparents house
for a visit, just to be sure that he would be safe.
When we arrived we asked questions, ran some baseline tests and set up our equipment.
We stayed around 5 hours and wrapped up. We told the couple we needed to review our
tapes and voice recorders and set up for a follow up investigation. On our video we
captured a doorknob wiggle in the upstairs area but that was all, we didn't catch anything
on voice recordings. Before returning for a follow up we did some research and found that
the house to the right of their home was recently occupied by a young woman who died of
unknown reasons, and the house to the left which was being remodeled we found it was
being worked on due to a fire. The owner told us the night before the fire he saw a black
figure surrounded by what looked like fire standing at the foot of his bed. The following
day he got a phone call that his house was on fire and they still haven't figured out how it
started. Several houses down the street we spoke to a older woman in her 60's, she
said she was bringing laundry up the stairs in her home several months earlier and saw a
big black figure standing at the top of the stairs. She told me she said a prayer and looked
again and the figure was gone. Our team is trying to make sense of the sightings in such
a large area. We are looking into the possibility that all these homes may have sat on
farmland and maybe there is a angry farmer wandering the land, the other thing we will be
looking into is that the big flood of 1955 maybe is associated with these alleged
hauntings. Since our investigations Carol has told us things calmed down but the dogs
still act strange sometimes and Carol and Steve still see the shadow pacing outside the
window. She has also recently found out that the former
owner of the house actually passed away, in the library to be exact. We are still
researching why so many seemingly paranormal occurrences have been associated with
this neighborhood.
